Dear Snohomish County Neighbor, <br /><br />As former Snohomish County Sheriffs, we don’t agree on everything, but we are united in our steadfast belief that the role of Sheriff is to protect the safety of all residents with integrity and fairness – free of politics or ideology. While as individuals we may align as Democrats, Republicans, and Independents, we are proud to endorse Susanna Johnson to be Snohomish County’s next Sheriff. Simply put, Susanna Johnson has the leadership, experience, integrity, and commitment to public safety and community that Snohomish County needs right now.<br /><br />Each of us has had the privilege of working alongside Johnson during our time at the Sheriff’s Office. Her work ethic and proven leadership skills are needed to successfully address challenges inside the department, and the strategic vision to address the issues facing law enforcement agencies here and around the nation. In her 33-year law enforcement career, Johnson has built genuine relationships, and partnerships that improve safety and peace of mind. Johnson’s integrity and exceptional reputation are built on the trust and respect she has earned with her peers and leaders across the region.<br /><br />Snohomish County needs a Sheriff who is willing to tackle the difficult problems – not with partisan rallies, self-serving videos, and inflammatory social media posts, but with action. We need fewer partisan political rallies exploiting the fears of the few, and a greater focus on professionalism and common-sense safety solutions. There has been a lot of discussion about Accreditation.<br /><br />The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office was Accredited in 2017, which is good for 5 years. At the beginning of a re-accreditation process, the leadership of the agency must provide documents proving that they have maintained standards since the last accreditation process.<br /><br />My opponent says he was not able to show those standards were maintained 2017-2021, which includes two years he was responsible.<br />I cannot speak on why they unable to provide the records (were the records misplaced during the remodel/move in 2020, did they not know how to prepare them for the inspection, or are there other reasons)? I was not the Accreditation Manager or Sheriff through 2019 so I don’t have that information.<br /><br />What we do know now, based upon an email (that should not have been used for campaign purposes), is he was allowed to start a new process in 2022.<br /><br />The email revealed he was still not able to accredit in 2022, or 2023, due to a continued failure to show adherence to the required standards under HIS leadership.<br /><br />#SusannaJohnsonForSheriff #SmartOnCrime #Integrity #Service #Leadership #Accountability #Experience #SnohomishCounty #SCSO
“Defunding the Police”: I do not support defunding law enforcement. I have worked for over 33 years in the profession, and it is common knowledge that the per capita rate of Law Enforcement officers to our population is the lowest in the nation. On top of that, Sheriff's Offices have historically the lowest number within that relative to the breadth of our responsibility to number of deputies counties can afford.<br /><br />I do support the concept of removing work better suited with other professionals and partnering for solutions that we don't have the expertise or staffing to do well. There has been great success in working with social workers, navigators, and crisis responders, and I would absolutely support programs where people can get services that do not require a gun and a badge present.
The campaign needs help to get the word out to voters that I'm running and the current sheriff has a challenger. Oftentimes, that's all it takes for folks to get onboard and support the campaign. The success we are seeing nation-wide is being "Smart on Crime," and being deliberate in partnering with social services to address behavioral health issues. Being homeless is not a crime, but the act of victimizing others or impacting our communities by taking over our parks or the doorways of our businesses is not acceptable. We must do more as a society.<br /><br />We need to fully invest and expand programs such as the Office of Neighborhoods, which is working with behavioral health providers to improve co-response strategies for people suffering addiction or mental health crises; work regionally to help people into shelter, treatment, and recovery.<br /><br />This is the program that the current sheriff cut last year without a plan to bring it back, until he had a challenger who knows its potential. We cannot expect law enforcement to do this alone - because of the results we see with this program, it allows our other deputies to focus on criminals.
I have taken an oath to support and defend the US Constitution, as well as our state and local laws. This is also important to me, personally. As mentioned, my duty is to support and defend. It is inappropriate for me to try to use positional power to decide what is constitutional and what is not; our government is intentionally designed for us to live with the judicial branch for separation of power.
Almost two years into the current sheriff's term, about half-way through, the agency stopped maintaining professional standards and failed to get re-accredited. This is not a reflection of the employees, it was a lack of prioritization by the administration.<br /><br />The significance of this cannot be overstated. It is very difficult to become state accredited, which was achieved by our previous administration. When you are an accredited agency, that means: you are following the best practices; it builds credibility and trust with the community; it keeps employees safer; it helps the agency be more operationally effective; it helps with retention and fair and equitable hiring and promotions; it reduces the likelihood of being sued and overall court settlement costs; it is known to improve morale and pride; and it can reduce insurance costs for the agency, which saves taxpayers money.<br /><br />#susannajohnsonforsheriff #smartoncrime #integrity #Leadership #accountability #Service #SnohomishCounty #SCSO
